HI! I’M ANNE Mcginty, the host of how i built my small business.

I’m passionate about spreading positivity and inspiring people to build their lives around having more time to live (in the way that is most meaningful to them) and finding steps to reach financial freedom using entrepreneurship.

I’m on a mission to simplify business know-how and personal finance lessons through the art of storytelling. In my podcast, you’ll hear fascinating stories with practical advice and insight from entrepreneurs willing to give you the keys to how it’s done. I also interview a few tangential guests, including a business broker and the insight he has to share on sales, values, and trends.

I’m doing this for aspiring entrepreneurs, anyone who is curious about the secrets of business owners and what happens behind the curtain, and listeners interested in the incredible stories of how people go from the spark of an idea to full blown success.

No ego. Just Insight.

In my show 'How I Built My Small Business,' I interview entrepreneurs who typically make a net profit of between $1m-$20m, sometimes less and sometimes more. Occasionally, I bring on a special guest, like an Olympic coach or a singer-songwriter who I think has insight from their journey that is helpful for listeners.

I love all of the other business shows and the fascinating knowledge that high caliber, super successful CEOs have to share. But I feel like focusing only on the $100m+ business leaders leaves a big gap.

What about the family-owned businesses that is bringing in $10m/ year with a 25% net profit?

Or, the person who started a relatively low-skill business concept that operated for 6 months a year, made multiple millions, and they hung out with their family for the other 6 months?

How about a self-taught skill that turned into a $2m business and allowed the person to work part-time and give up your full-time job?

Or, the lifestyle-centric sailing business that operates a few months a year and makes the owner enough to live for the rest of the year?

How cool are these stories! These people are just as incredible as the unicorns, and their advice and insight may be more relatable to my listener.

My goal is to highlight some of the smaller, more 'Main Street' entrepreneurs and to make my guests feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and authentic while offering invaluable insight to inspire and pave the way for the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.

who is anne mcginty?

HI! I’M SO HAPPY YOU’RE HERE!

I’m Anne, but friends call me “Annie.”

I love seeing people succeed and will forever be cheering you on.

Happy people are nice people, and the world could surely benefit from having more positivity.

SO, WHO IS ANNE?

I am a first-generation Filipina-American and at thirty-nine, I reached a point where my passive income exceeded my family’s expenses. A major step in getting there was entrepreneurship, which is one of the reasons I decided to start a podcast: to share the advice and insight small businesses owners have for building lucrative businesses. The other big step was investing.

I learned about savvy investing from my immigrant parents, who embarked on their American journey in the early 1970s with just $200 each and without any external assistance. Witnessing their incredible journey, I watched as they amassed a portfolio of a dozen properties, funded their four children’s educations, and splurged on international family trips for a party of six. Yet, my parents toiled tirelessly, often working long hours, even through the night, without feeling they had the luxury of choosing between money and time.

I remember the roller coaster ride after college, transitioning out of an education, backpacking for a year, selling toothpaste, trying to balance building up financial stability while dealing with soul-searching questions, and living paycheck-to-paycheck in San Francisco. In my twenties, I ventured into a series of small businesses, including a greeting card venture, an importing business fraught with defective products, handmade ice pops that had an unexpected sticking issue, and a professional Christmas light installation company with no prior experience. Despite setbacks, two of my businesses had successful financial exits and garnered recognition in renowned publications such as Sunset Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, Refinery29, 7x7 magazine, and more.

For my podcast How I Built My Small Business, I extract insight from entrepreneurs who are doing incredible work in their niches, balancing profits, ethics, and lifestyle. We talk about how they found their ideas, the steps they took to get up and off the ground, peeks behind their financial curtains, setbacks they faced, and breakthroughs they celebrated, all while removing ego and selflessly sharing advice.

I hope you enjoy the show! I welcome your feedback, ideas, and questions, so please get in touch.
