Lloyd Rooney - From bar manager to big boss: rise of the jetson group

Lloyd Rooney never imagined he'd be running multiple successful restaurants in New Zealand. Pulled from traditional schooling at age 12 due to dyslexia, Lloyd discovered his greatest gift: learning how to learn on his own terms. This self-education carried him through university, law school, and eventually into the fast-paced world of hospitality.

"I emotionally bought into that first restaurant job," Lloyd explains, describing how being trusted to manage The Engineer (one of London's pioneering gastropubs) shaped his entire business philosophy. Now co-founder of the Jetson Group with restaurants that generate anywhere from $2,500 on quiet days to a staggering $55,000 during peak times, he attributes his success to giving staff the same autonomy he once received.

What truly sets Lloyd's approach apart is his framework for empowering employees while maintaining clear expectations. He looks for that special "light in their eyes" when hiring—people who naturally connect with customers and bring positive energy to every interaction. This human element remains at the center of his business model, even as he navigates extreme seasonal fluctuations that require expanding from 16 year-round employees to 45 during summer months.

Lloyd shares candidly about both triumphs and failures throughout his unexpected career path. From interior designer for celebrities in London to pig farmer in rural New Zealand before returning to his hospitality roots, he's learned when to persevere and when to let go. His greatest regret? Not pulling the plug sooner on locations that weren't working despite having identical menus, staff, and concepts as his successful venues.

Beyond operational insights, Lloyd offers wisdom on building trust, prioritizing staff happiness, and maintaining balance as a leader. "Our job is to put fires out, not start them," he tells his managers—a philosophy that has allowed him to step back while his restaurants continue to thrive. Whether you're in hospitality or any leadership position, his journey demonstrates how empathy, autonomy, and authentic connection create sustainable success.
